A furnace filter is an essential part of any HVAC system that works to prevent dust and debris from damaging your blower fan and other vital components. A dirty furnace filter is the number one cause of many HVAC issues, which makes it essential you replace the filter regularly as it can eventually become dirty enough that very little air can flow through it. In most cases, your furnace filter will need to be replaced at least once every three months, but there are many situations where you may need to replace it every month or two instead.
How to Know When Your Furnace Filter Needs Replaced
Knowing when your furnace filter needs to be replaced is vital for avoiding any potential issues and ensuring your HVAC system continues functioning properly. The easiest way to make sure you’re keeping up on this essential task is to make a note on your calendar so that you remember to check the condition of your filter every month. If your home is older, overly dusty or you have pets, we would recommend checking your filter every two weeks as these factors will all cause it to get dirty much more quickly.
If the filter still looks mostly clean, you can help to slightly extend its life by gently cleaning all of the dust, hair and debris off of it every time you check it. Once the filter starts to look dark gray or black, you’ll want to replace it as soon as possible as this indicates it is starting to clog up. You can also tell if your filter needs to be replaced by holding it up to a light. If you can’t easily see the light through the filter, it also means you’ll want to replace it.
While most people use disposable furnace filters because they’re more convenient, you also have the option to instead opt for a washable filter. Using a washable filter is a bit more work since you will need to thoroughly clean it and let it dry instead of just tossing the old filter and replacing it. However, washable filters are usually the cheaper long-term option and work equally as well as disposable filters. If you do decide to use a washable filter, you still need to make sure to clean it just as often as you would replace a disposable filter.
